The leading cause of severe vision loss is due to macular disease. In patients over the age fifty, it is due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In patients under the age of fifty it is due to edema in diabetic retinopathy.
Well-founded estimates project the worldwide number of people with AMD in 2020 to be 196 million and almost double by 2040.
9.3% of the American population have diabetes (*According to The American Diabetes Association)
3.8% of the U.S. population is impacted by the disease — this consists of an estimated 770,000 people.
